BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Australia and Brunei Darussalam are stepping up cooperation to enhance coral reef monitoring through a workshop under the Australian Government’s Marine Resources Initiative (MRI) Phase 2.

The workshop, held in the capital, brings together scientists from the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) and the Department of Fisheries to strengthen national capabilities in monitoring and managing coral reef ecosystems.

Led by AIMS Principal Research Scientist Dr Manuel Gonzalez-Rivero, the session focuses on identifying key areas for bilateral cooperation and advancing collaborative efforts in the region.

The MRI Phase 2 programme supports Southeast Asian countries in improving their capacity to protect marine environments, particularly coral reefs, through enhanced data integration and evidence-based management approaches.

As part of the initiative, AIMS scientists have been working closely with Brunei’s Department of Fisheries to train local professionals in reef monitoring techniques, including the use of advanced technologies, as well as knowledge transfer tailored to local needs.

The programme also aims to foster long-term partnerships among coral reef researchers and practitioners across Southeast Asia and Australia, strengthening regional efforts to safeguard marine ecosystems. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
