BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The Brunei-Muara District Office issued a BN$300 compound fine to a Malaysian national after an investigation into the illegal disposal of food waste in a public area.
The enforcement action followed a public tip-off supported by evidence after the incident went viral on social media.
The District Office’s Licensing and Enforcement Division found that the individual had committed an offence under Section 12(1)(a) of the Miscellaneous Act (Chapter 30) by dumping or leaving food waste at Ban 4, Kampong Mulaut.
A BN$300 compound notice was issued to Koh Tian Liang on July 21.
The district office expressed appreciation to members of the public who provided information, enabling prompt enforcement action.
The public was reminded that everyone has a responsibility to maintain environmental cleanliness.
Dumping rubbish or food waste indiscriminately is an offence under the Miscellaneous Act. Upon conviction in court, individuals may face a fine of up to BN$9,000, while companies may be fined up to BN$30,000. Offenders may also face imprisonment of up to 12 months, or both.
The public is encouraged to cooperate with authorities by reporting illegal dumping activities. Reports should include the location of the incident together with photographs or video recordings of the offender and may be submitted via the division’s WhatsApp service to facilitate immediate enforcement action. – Borneo Bulletin/ANN
