Two killed in blaze at Tokyo’s Jiyugaoka dstrict that spread to five buildings

TOKYO: A fire burned through several residential buildings in the Jiyugaoka district in Tokyo through the early hours of Friday (March 27), killing two people.

The deceased are believed to be residents with whom no one has been able to establish contact, and police are working to confirm their identities.

According to local fire officials, at around 12:35am on Friday, a male resident of a two-storey house in the district reported that a fire had broken out and that someone was trapped inside.

The fire burned a total of approximately 220sq m across five buildings, including three adjacent houses and one apartment building, and was extinguished about five hours later.

A man in his 70s was recovered from the house where the fire started, and a woman in her 80s was taken from a neighbouring two-storey house, but both were confirmed dead at the site, police said. - The Japan News/ANN
