Indonesia considering missile systems from Italy, France and Turkiye for new warship

JAKARTA: Indonesia is considering missile systems from several countries, including Italy, France and Türkiye for its newly arrived warship, KRI Prabu Siliwangi-321.

Indonesian Navy Chief of Staff Admiral Muhammad Ali (pic) said the selection of missiles for the vessel remains under evaluation, with multiple options currently being assessed.

"The missiles are still under consideration. There are several options. There are missiles from Italy, from MBDA France, and possibly Türkiye. All are still under our consideration,” he said according to ANTARA News Agency on Thursday.

Muhammad Ali said decisions on the ship’s sensor systems are still pending, although its main gun systems have already been finalised.

KRI Prabu Siliwangi-321 arrived at Tanjung Priok Port, the main seaport serving Jakarta on Thursday after sailing from Italy, marking the latest addition to Indonesia’s growing naval fleet.

The warship, built by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, is designed to carry out a wide range of missions, including patrol, surface and subsurface warfare, air defence, as well as humanitarian operations.

According to the Indonesian Navy, the vessel has undergone weapons system and combat readiness tests prior to its arrival, including a structural firing test of its 127-millimetre gun during its final voyage.

The ship is equipped with a 127-millimetre OTO Melara main gun, a 76-millimetre Strales gun for medium-range air targets, vertical missile launch systems, anti-submarine torpedoes and close-range weapons. - Bernama
