House begins hearing on Sara Duterte’s impeachment case

MANILA: The House committee on justice on Monday (March 2) began its deliberations on the impeachment complaints against Vice President Sara Duterte (pic) to determine if they are sufficient in form and substance.

The complaints against Duterte were filed separately by the Makabayan coalition, composed of the Kabataan, Gabriela and ACT Teachers party list groups, lawyer Nathaniel Cabrera and civil society groups.

Four impeachment complaints were lodged against Duterte.

However, civil society leaders and clergy who filed the second impeachment complaint against her have decided to withdraw it, and instead express “full support” for the third complaint.

Duterte is facing allegations of betrayal of public trust, bribery, graft and corruption, including the misuse of P612 million in confidential funds.

This proceeding came as Duterte announced her presidential bid in 2028, becoming the first aspirant to do so.

Earlier, the two impeachment complaints against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. were officially dismissed by the chamber on Feb. 11 for being insufficient in substance. - The Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN
