MANILA: A prayer march began Wednesday morning (Feb 25) at the Edsa Shrine as part of the commemoration of the 40th anniversary of the 1986 People Power Revolution.
Participants first gathered at the Edsa Shrine for a rosary prayer before marching toward the People Power Monument.
Civil society groups carried placards bearing calls for accountability and to end corruption.
Among those joining are Tindig Pilipinas, Union Theological Seminary, Akbayan Partylist, Partido Manggagawa and People Power Volunteers for Reform.
Tindig Pilipinas co-convenor Francisco “Kiko” Aquino Dee said this activity is part of a series of commemorative events organised by the Trillion Peso March Movement.
Today’s peaceful protest carries the same call as the two previous anti-corruption rallies joined by church and civil organisations on Sept. 21 and Nov. 30, he said.
“Although there are some big fish who appear to have been jailed or may soon be jailed, there are also those who continue to slip through, so we really need to press the call that all corrupt officials must be held accountable,” Dee told Inquirer at the Edsa Shrine on Wednesday.
He said that despite being a working holiday, they are hoping to reach the same numbers as the Nov. 30 Trillion Peso March with 20,000 to 30,000 attendees.
The programme was followed by the “Panata ng Mamamayan” (Pledge of the citizens) at the People Power Monument. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN
