BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The Brunei National Seismic Centre (NSC), under the Geotechnical and Geological Survey Section, Department of Technical Services, Public Works Department, has reported that a strong earthquake struck the region at 12:57:45am local time on Monday (Feb 23).
The earthquake registered a magnitude of 6.9 Mb with a focal depth of approximately 600km. Its epicentre was located in Sabah, about 19km from Kampong Mantanani and approximately 256km northeast of Bandar Seri Begawan.
According to the NSC, the seismic event was detected by local seismic stations across Brunei Darussalam. Several areas within the country reported experiencing light tremors shortly after the quake occurred.
Residents took to social media to share their experiences, with several individuals reporting that they felt slight tremors during the incident.
Some described sensing the floor gently moving beneath them, while others noted that hanging bedroom lamps swayed briefly before returning to a standstill.
Authorities confirmed that the tremors were minor and did not pose any threat to public safety or infrastructure.
The NSC further assured that the earthquake does not present any potential hazard to Brunei Darussalam and the centre will continue to closely monitor seismic activity in the region and will issue updates should any significant developments arise.
