YANGON: Children of migrant workers in Thailand, including those from Myanmar, will be allowed to attend school legally even if they lack official documents, under a new education law published in the Royal Gazette on January 30, 2026.

The law guarantees the right to education for all children in Thailand, regardless of nationality, household registration, or legal status.

Schools will no longer be allowed to refuse enrollment. Children without a 13-digit ID number can study using a designated “G code” until they complete their education.

Moe Gyo, Chairman of the Joint Action Committee for Burmese Affairs (JACBA), urged migrant families to make full use of this opportunity. He explained that schools and parents must cooperate with relevant offices to help children obtain proper documentation over time.

The policy will take effect nationwide from the start of the May 2026 academic year. It reflects Thailand’s long-standing “Education for All” principle and aims to ensure that migrant children grow up educated and able to contribute positively to Thai society. - Eleven Media/ANN
