BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Repair works on the main water pipeline at Kampong Batang Mitus continued to make progress, with 12 of the 16 damaged pipes restored as of 10.30pm on Friday (Jan 30), as large parts of the Brunei-Muara District remained without water since Thursday (Jan 29).

The Public Works Department (PWD) said the emergency repair works, necessitated by landslides in the area, are expected to be completed by Sunday (Feb 1), subject to weather conditions. Water supply is projected to be fully restored by Monday (Feb 2), once water levels stabilise and reach storage tanks in affected areas.

Areas impacted by the disruption include Mukim Gadong ‘A’ and ‘B’, Mukim Berakas ‘A’ and ‘B’, Mukim Kota Batu, Mukim Kilanas, Mukim Kianggeh and Mukim Pengkalan Batu.

A survey by the Bulletin found residents queuing at water distribution points and standing pipes set up by PWD at strategic locations to collect their water supply.

Bottled water was also reported to be sold out at many convenience stores as residents stocked up for household use.

The disruption has affected business operations, with several restaurants and cafes opting to close due to the lack of water.

Others continued operating on a limited basis, offering takeaway services only or serving food in disposable containers.

Kampong Lambak resident Muhammad Azliwazieni Mahari said the water cut had caused inconvenience to his family but expressed appreciation to PWD and the government for the swift repair works and provision of water.

However, he hoped that improved contingency measures and development planning would be considered in the future to better manage similar situations. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
