MANILA: Mayon Volcano in Albay recorded volcanic earthquakes, rockfall events, and pyroclastic density currents (PDCs), locally known as uson, in the past 24 hours as it remains under Alert Level 3, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

In its 24-hour monitoring bulletin, Phivolcs reported five volcanic earthquakes, 377 rockfall events, and 47 PDCs.

Aside from this, a crater glow can be observed while the volcano edifice remains inflated, Phivolcs said.

The volcano also released 2,539 tonnes of sulfur dioxide on Friday (Jan 30), which was more than the 1,624 tonnes recorded a day before, it added.

Phivolcs said the volcano emitted a plume that rose 100m above the crater and drifted northwestward and west-southwestward.

The agency said the volcano remains under Alert Level 3, which signifies intensified or magmatic unrest. Entry into the volcano’s six-kilometre radius, or the permanent danger zone, is prohibited, and aircraft are banned from flying close to the volcano.

Phivolcs reminded nearby residents of possible hazards, such as rockfalls, landslides or avalanches, ballistic fragments, lava flows, PDCs, moderate-sized explosions, and lahars. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN
