PHNOM PENH: Minister of Health Chheang Ra has urged authorities and all relevant stakeholders to maintain a high level of vigilance to prevent and curb the importation of the Nipah virus into Cambodia, after the infectious disease was reported in several countries across Asia.

The call was made on the morning of January 28, during an inspection of quarantine operations at Techo International Airport.

His inspection was accompanied by Charles Vann, director at Cambodia Airport Investment Co., Ltd. (CAIC), and representatives from relevant institutions.

The minister noted that Cambodia has not yet detected any cases of the Nipah virus, but stressed that the ministry has a responsibility to remain fully prepared to prevent any potential transmission into communities.

“Cambodia has not recorded any Nipah cases so far, but the ministry must stay ready to protect the public from cross-border transmission,” he said.

He called for the strict implementation of standard operating procedures at international entry and exit points in cases involving suspected travellers, and urged stronger coordination among airports, airlines, hospitals, and municipal and provincial health departments.

The minister also highlighted the importance of preparedness drills covering all response stages, from early detection and isolation to patient transfer, treatment and discharge.

Concluding the inspection, Ra expressed appreciation to leaders and health officials at all levels for their readiness and close cooperation in safeguarding public health, emphasising that “prevention today means a better tomorrow.” - The Phnom Penh Post/ANN
