Over five million people in Cambodia in debt as of 2025: Report


PHNOM PENH: About 5.13 million people in Cambodia had utilised a total loan ofUS$62.13 billion from formal lenders by the end of 2025, said the Credit Bureau Cambodia (CBC)'s annual report released on Wednesday (March 25).

The figures showed that the number of borrowers rose by 1.78 per cent from 5.04 million at the end of 2024, as the amount of total debt increased by 5.3 per cent from US$59 billion.

Phnom Penh, the capital city, along with Kandal and Kampong Speu provinces, accounted for 61 per cent of the total credit balance.

"Phnom Penh had the largest credit volume of $31.66 billion, equivalent to 51 per cent of the national credit balance, with a total of 723,000 borrowers," the report said.

The ratio of loans overdue by more than 90 days stood at 6.46 per cent at the end of 2025, it added.

According to the report, these figures were sourced from the 196 banks and financial institutions, which are members of the CBC. - Xinhua
