Indonesia targets car-free day in 514 cities by 2029

JAKARTA: Indonesia is targeting to implement Car Free Day (CFD) in 514 cities nationwide by 2029, as part of efforts to encourage greater public participation in sports.

Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir (pic) said the initiative is currently being implemented in 170 cities.

"This is part of a broader strategy to embed sports into everyday community life.

"One way to popularise sports among the public is through CFD events that are accessible, affordable, and inclusive for all segments of society,” he said as reported by Antara News Agency, on Tuesday (Jan 27).

Erick said based on the ministry’s 2024 data, Indonesia’s public sports participation rate stands at 26.3 per cent - far behind Singapore (55 per cent), the United Kingdom (60 per cent) and Japan (70 per cent).

He said the ministry is targeting an increase in public sports participation to 47.5 per cent by 2029 as well as raising the Sports Development Index from 0.32 to 0.35. - Bernama
