Brunei gears up for heavy rain and thunderstorms from Sunday (Jan 25) onwards

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): Brunei Darussalam is set to experience a spell of active and potentially hazardous weather from Sunday through Thursday, with heavy thundery showers, strong wind gusts and rough sea conditions expected across several parts of the country.

The Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD) said the active weather is forecast from January 25 to January 29, coinciding with the first phase of the Northeast Monsoon, commonly known as the rainy season. During this period, unstable conditions are typical, with the likelihood of sudden heavy downpours and thunderstorms.

According to the forecast, showers — occasionally heavy and thundery — may be accompanied by wind gusts of up to 50 kilometres per hour during or near intense rainfall. Over Brunei waters, sea conditions are expected to range from moderate to rough, with wave heights between 1.0 and 3.0 metres.

The department warned of a high risk of flash floods, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas, as well as near river banks during prolonged heavy rain and high tide. Landslides, fallen trees and roof damage are also possible during periods of strong winds and heavy showers.

Sea conditions during this period are deemed dangerous for small boat operations, marine recreational activities and water sports. Fishermen, road users and the general public have been advised to exercise caution and to remain alert to the latest weather updates.

BDMD said it will continue to closely monitor the situation and issue weather advisories or warnings if necessary. The public is encouraged to stay informed through the Brunei WX mobile application, the Weather Line 114, the department’s official website, and its social media channels. -- Borneo Bulletin/ANN
