Indonesia begins weather modification operations to curb flood risk in Jakarta

JAKARTA: Indonesian authorities on Tuesday (Jan 13) began weather modification operations to reduce the risk of hydrometeorological disasters, or extreme weather, in Jakarta, following flooding in several areas of the capital a day earlier.

Jakarta Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) head Isnawa Adji said the operation conducted by the National Disaster Management Agency would continue for the next five days, Antara News Agency reported.

"Subsequently, the Jakarta BPBD can continue the operations, of course based on Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency’s weather forecasts,” he said.

On Monday, around 28 neighbourhoods and 44 roads across Jakarta, including Central, North, West, South and East Jakarta were inundated after a continuous rain.

According to a statement from Jakarta BPBD, as of 6pm Tuesday, two neighbourhoods in West Jakarta and one in East Jakarta remained affected by flooding. - Bernama
