YANGON: More than 200 people have been displaced after a fire broke out in Gadone Paw Village, Mudon Township, on the morning of January 8, leaving 57 households affected and creating an urgent need for housing as part of recovery efforts, according to local residents.
At present, fire victims are taking temporary shelter at a Buddhist monastery in Gadone Paw Village. Their daily food needs are being met through donations from well-wishers, said Ko Win Min Soe, chairman of a local volunteer social relief organisation based in the village.
“There are 213 fire victims in total, including 38 students,” Ko Win Min Soe said. “Among them are 20 male and 18 female students studying at primary, middle and high school levels. Donors have been providing food, drinking water, clothing and kitchen utensils.”
He added that it has become increasingly difficult to provide daily meals for more than 200 displaced people. “If the victims can rebuild their homes, they will be able to cook and live independently again. The most urgent need for rehabilitation is housing,” he said.
According to Ko Win Min Soe, the planned houses will be simple structures made of bamboo walls with thatched roofs, with an estimated cost of around 800,000 kyats (US$381) per house. Local volunteers and donors are working together to mobilise resources to support the reconstruction efforts. - Eleven Media/ANN
