VIENTIANE: City authorities convened on Dec 30 to discuss the possibility of a feasibility study being carried out to assess the use of a drainage channel in the Sikhottabong district as a floating night market.

The proposal, which aims to provide an added visitor attraction, boost trade, and make better use of the city’s amenities, was discussed at the 54th meeting of the Vientiane Administration, chaired by the Mayor of Vientiane, Dr Athsaphangthong Siphandone, and attended by senior officials, according to the Vientiane Mai Newspapers.

The scheme centres on the Vat Tay 2 drainage channel, which passes through Dongnaxok, Phonsavard and Nongbuathong villages, and would see the waterway become a floating night market, with dining and leisure activities also on offer.

The venture was proposed by the Head of the Investment Promotion and Management Committee Office.

The presentation that was delivered was intended only to seek feedback on whether a feasibility study would be permitted.

The meeting also reviewed a plan to build a roadside drainage channel in Phakhao village, Xaythany district, presented by the Vientiane Public Works and Transport Department.

Attendees further considered plans to survey, design and build concrete roads linking Dondaeng and Nongping roads in Chanthabouly district with Nongxeum in Xaythany district.

Additional proposals included road links from 13 North Road at Ban Nakhoun Noi to the railway area in Naxaithong district, and from the railway to the Tha Ngon road, also known as Road 10, in Xaythany district.

The meeting also heard a proposal concerning the maintenance of national highways using a combined output performance-based road contract and toll collection model.

Members of the Vientiane Administration were also briefed on the reception of a high-level delegation from Vietnam, which visited Vientiane to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Lao PDR.

The meeting concluded with a review of the work carried out in the capital during 2025 and the goals of the 2026 work plan, with the Mayor giving advice for the coming year before closing the session. - Vientiane Times/ANN
