Myanmar election panel says 215 journalists from 61 international media organisations have applied to cover polls

YANGON: The Union Election Commission (UEC) announced 215 journalists from 61 international media outlets have applied to cover the upcoming election.

The UEC was responding to a media outlet’s query on the number of foreign media outlets and individuals allowed to cover the first phase of the 2025 general election to be held on Dec 28, 2025.

The UEC said that international media outlets had applied to the Ministry of Information by Dec 12 to cover all three phases of the multiparty democratic general election to be held on Dec 28, 2025, and that 215 journalists from 61 international media outlets had applied by Dec 12 to cover the election.

The first phase of the 2025 general election will be held on Dec 28 in 102 townships and the second phase will be held in 100 townships on Jan 11, 2026, and third phase will be held in 63 townships on Jan 25, 2026.

On Dec 25, the People’s Party’s election rally in Dagon Myothit (South) Township was covered by an American news agency The New York Times, an Australian news agency ABC TV, and another foreign news agency.

Similarly, Daw Nan Su Thazin Aung aka V V Chen, a Pyithu Hluttaw candidate from the Peace and Development Party, who will contest the election in Hlaingthayar (West) Township, was interviewed by The New York Times, according to her Facebook post. - Eleven Media/ANN
