MANILA: Transport group Manibela began its three-day transport strike on Tuesday (Dec 9) to protest the government’s “vague promises” in response to the alleged abuses jeepney drivers continue to face.

Manibela also objected to the “payola,” or bribery system, within the Land Transportation Office (LTO).

In a series of Facebook posts, the group said that commuters were stranded in various parts of Metro Manila where the protests were being staged.

“Public transportation in Metro Manila is paralysed!” one of the posts read.

“No jeepneys are operating — Metro Manila is paralyzed! This is caused by the excessive arrogance of the DOTr, LTFRB, and LTO. Yet, they lack concern and understanding for the Filipino people, especially for commuters, workers, and students,” Manibela also said, referring to the Department of Transportation, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, and Land Transportation Office.

Aside from “payola,” the group also criticised Malacanang’s order for the DOTr to look into the concerns raised by jeepney drivers and operators, noting that “the reality on the ground demands more than a passing glance.”

The Philippine National Police has placed its vehicles on standby to assist stranded passengers, according to acting chief Lt Gen Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN
