MANILA: The United People’s Initiative (UPI) said Tuesday (Nov 18) it will proceed with the third day of its rally against government corruption at the People Power Monument in Quezon City, even as the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) ended its protest at the Luneta Park in Manila.

The INC cut its rally short on Monday night, citing that its members “did not need” three days to register their calls for “transparency and a better democracy.” It was originally set to end on Tuesday, November 18.

Asked whether they will proceed with the third day of their rally, in a message to the Inquirer early Tuesday morning, UPI secretary-general retired Capt. Rey Valeros said, “We will proceed today at the People Power Monument.”

Likewise, in a social media post early Tuesday morning, UPI convenor retired Gen. Romeo Poquiz said, “The fight isn’t over. Our third day will proceed today at (Epifanio delos Santos Avenue or) Edsa.”

However, in a message to the Inquirer, Quezon City Public Order and Safety Chief Elmo San Diego said the local government has yet to approve a permit for the supposed third day of the UPI rally.

The UPI is a group composed mainly of retired military and police officials.

Among the UPI’s calls were for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to step down amid alleged corruption in flood control and other infrastructure projects. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN
