Cambodia clears 40,000 mines, unexploded ordnance from more than 10,000 hectares in 10 months

PHNOM PENH: The Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) cleared more than 40,000 landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) and provided mine-risk education to over two million people during the first 10 months of 2025.

In a statement on Saturday (Nov 15), CMAC reported that from January to October 2025, its mine action operations achieved several significant results. These include the clearance of 14,397 hectares of minefields and areas contaminated with explosive remnants of war (ERW), as well as the discovery and removal of 43,916 mines and UXO.

In addition, CMAC conducted 21,788 mine-risk education sessions. Among these, 1,052,438 household visits were carried out, reaching a total of 2,220,950 people with safety information.

In areas affected by the border clashes with Thailand in Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear provinces, CMAC also conducted more than 230 mine/UXO risk education sessions specifically for displaced persons, with nearly 40,000 participants.

Regarding survey and marking operations, CMAC teams have completed surveys in 66 of 77 targeted villages affected by landmines. Eleven frontline villages have been partially surveyed and remain under further assessment. CMAC identified 3,586 pieces or locations of explosive evidence and discovered 1,093 square kilometres of mine-contaminated areas. - The Phnom Penh Post/ANN
