Myanmar forms committee to take legal action against fake news, misinformation, obscene content, political attacks on Internet


YANGON: The National Defence and Security Council established the Committee to Legally Prohibit and Take Action Against Fake News, Misinformation, Indecent Images, Videos, and Sexual Content that are Not in Accordance with Myanmar's Traditional Culture on the Internet, and Political Attacks on the Internet recently.

The committee would legally prohibit and take action against posting fake news, misinformation, indecent images, videos, and sexual content that are not in line with Myanmar's traditional culture, and political attacks.

The committee would be chaired by the Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, with the Deputy Minister of Transport and Communications as the vice chairman.

Its members would include Director General of the Ministry of Legal Affairs, Director General of the Ministry of Information, a representative from the Office of the Chief of the Military Security Officer of the Armed Forces, Director General of the Central Bank of Myanmar, the Deputy Director General of the Special Investigation Department, and Head of the Crime and Legal Affairs Department of the Myanmar Police Force.

The Deputy Inspector General of the Myanmar Police Force will serve as the Secretary of the committee, the Head of the Crime Police as the Joint Secretary (1), and the Deputy Director General of the Ministry of Transport and Communications as the Joint Secretary (2).

The committee will form a team of experts with technical expertise to monitor 24 hours a day the activities of posting fake news, misinformation, inappropriate images, videos, and sexually explicit content that are not in line with Myanmar's traditional culture, and political attacks.

It will use technology to detect and prohibit the posting, broadcasting, sharing, and promotion of fake news, misinformation, inappropriate images, videos, and sexually explicit content that are not in line with Myanmar's traditional culture, and political attacks, and will take effective action against perpetrators in accordance with existing laws.

In addition, the committee is to form a team to take action against fake news and misinformation on the Internet, block the telephone numbers used by the perpetrators, obtain information on the bank accounts used by them for financial matters, deposit and withdrawal records, and temporarily block bank accounts.

It will also coordinate with relevant organisations including the Ministry of Transport and Communications and the Central Bank of Myanmar, and send letters of objection and notifications to relevant departments/organisations to prohibit the violations.

Similarly, the committee is to inform the perpetrators that the relevant departments/organisations can take legal action in accordance with existing laws, to widely educate the public that posting fake news, misinformation, inappropriate images, videos, and sexually explicit content on the Internet. It will have the authority to issue necessary orders, instructions, and procedures, as well as to form necessary working committees and groups. - Eleven Media/ANN
