MANILA: The effects of super typhoon Fung-wong have so far left the country over P142 million (US$2.5mil) in agricultural devastation, said the Department of Agriculture (DA) on Tuesday (Nov 11).
Majority of the losses were in rice, with a production loss of 6,798 metric tonnes amounting to P116.37 million.
Corn production was also affected, with 1,228 metric tonnes-volume loss amounting to P19.76 million.
A total of 209 metric tonnes of high-value crops were also lost, amounting to P6.07 million.
Furthermore, Uwan also killed seven heads of livestock and poultry worth P91,500.
In response to these effects, the DA said it has so far provided P379.31 million worth of agricultural assistance, P1.24 million of animal feed, P771,620 worth of fish fingerlings and P2.57 million worth of rice stock.
The department said it has also made available its quick response fund for the rehabilitation and recovery of affected areas.
Uwan swept across the country from the weekend through Monday at its peak intensity, with Luzon bearing the brunt of its impact.
As of writing, Uwan has now weakened into a severe tropical storm after it finally exited the Philippine area of responsibility. - Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN
