Lao parliament session opens with leaders promising to drive national development


VIENTIANE (Xinhua): The 10th ordinary session of the Lao National Assembly's ninth legislature has opened, marking an important step forward in advancing the country's legislative process and policy development.

The session, chaired by Lao National Assembly (NA) President Saysomphone Phomvihane, will run until Nov. 21, Lao News Agency reported on Monday.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Saysomphone emphasized the session's importance in guiding Laos' next phase of national development. Lawmakers will review the ninth five-year national socio-economic development plan for 2021-2025 and discuss the framework for the 10th five-year plan for 2026-2030. They will also deliberate on the state budget and monetary plans for 2025 and 2026.

Other key agenda items include reviewing national programs aimed at addressing economic and financial challenges, strengthening drug control efforts, and evaluating the performance of key oversight bodies.

During the session, NA members will deliberate on pressing national issues to promote transparency and accountability in governance.

The session serves as an important platform to assess progress under the current development plan and to lay a solid foundation for Laos' next phase of socio-economic growth. - Xinhua
