BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Minister of Education Datin Seri Setia Dr Romaizah Mohd Salleh, in her capacity as the chairperson of the National Commission of Brunei Darussalam for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco), reaffirmed Brunei Darussalam’s steadfast commitment to advancing Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4), with particular emphasis on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) education and future-ready competencies.

She said this in her National Statement during the 43rd Session of the Unesco General Conference held at the Silk Road Samarkand Congress Centre in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, from Oct 30 until Nov 13.

She also highlighted the launch of the Greening Education Plan at the 53rd Seameo Council Conference hosted by Brunei Darussalam in July 2025, demonstrating the nation’s regional leadership in shaping the global education agenda beyond 2030.

Brunei Darussalam remains committed to upholding Unesco’s core principles: promoting peace, fostering scientific collaboration for sustainable development, and cultivating inclusive societies through quality education and cultural preservation.

The general conference brought together representatives from 194 member states and associate members, as well as observers, intergovernmental organisations, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). The biennial conference serves as Unesco’s highest decision-making body, responsible for formulating the organisation’s policies, reviewing its activities and budget, and electing members to the Executive Board.

Among the key highlights of the general conference was the General Policy Debate, during which heads of delegation from each member state delivered national statements reaffirming their commitment to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

These statements reflected the diversity of efforts and achievements in advancing education, science, culture, and related fields. Additionally, the High-Level Ministerial Segment on Education was held as a side event in conjunction with the general conference.

Permanent Secretary (Core Education) at the Ministry of Education (MoE) and Secretary-General of the National Commission of Brunei Darussalam for Unesco Dr Shamsiah Zuraini Kanchanawati Tajuddin was also in attendance.

Accompanying them were officials from the Embassy of Brunei Darussalam in Ankara, Turkiye, representing the Permanent Delegation of Brunei Darussalam to Unesco, as well as officers from the MoE. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
