PHNOM PENH: Cambodia’s musical heritage is getting a bold, modern revival as young artists breathe new life into traditional sounds.

The NeoRoots Project is reimagining ancient instruments and melodies, blending them with contemporary rhythms to connect younger generations with the country’s rich cultural roots.

Described by organisers as “the soul of Cambodian music”, NeoRoots was launched to ensure traditional instruments are not lost amid global trends.

“We want the younger generation not to forget our ancient culture, our original culture – of our Cambodian nation,” said a project spokesperson. “It’s about refreshing our culture, making it relevant for today.”

Since its inception last year, the project has collaborated with seasoned Cambodian artists to create music that bridges generations.

The name “NeoRoots” reflects its mission: “Neo” for new, and “Roots” for heritage.

“We take the culture from our ancestors to create new things for the younger generations,” a team member explained.

Songs like Kromom Bei Style, a modern twist on traditional Romvong, exemplify the project’s vision.

“The goal is to create music inspired by Romvong that could go viral, be danced to everywhere and become a pop sound for the global stage,” the team said.

Collaboration with veteran artists has been key.

“Many seniors from previous generations helped bring it back and spread it, making it known,” a project representative said.

“This inspires others to do the same. We’re not doing this just for ourselves; we want everyone to start creating more in this way,” he added.

NeoRoots will mark a major milestone with its first-ever live performance, NeoRoots Vol.1 – Inherit, on Oct 31 at 6pm at the T.Y. Media E-Sports Center, where all participating KlapYaHandz artists will perform together.

“This is our job as artists,” one participant said. “We want to remind everyone of our cultural roots. Preserving and innovating our music is not just passion — it’s a responsibility.”

“We cannot wait to share this special live performance with you. Don’t forget to save your date,” added another.

With its blend of old and new, NeoRoots is positioning Cambodian music for a vibrant future, ensuring the melodies of the past resonate with audiences both locally and globally.

In essence, KlapYaHandz, a key partner, sees the project as “a bridge between the old generation and the new generation”.

By preserving traditional elements while embracing modern sounds, NeoRoots is creating a unique musical identity that honors the past and embraces the future.
