Myanmar's Internal Revenue Department warns of scams imitating official website to solicit money and personal information

YANGON: The Internal Revenue Department (IRD) has issued a warning to beware of scammers who are copying the official website of the Internal Revenue Department and soliciting money and other personal information from taxpayers.

Fraudsters are copying the official website of the Internal Revenue Department and soliciting taxpayers' personal information through social media or by calling them by telephone, asking for money, and tempting them to visit a fake website and download a mobile application.

If taxpayers have any doubts, they can contact the Internal Revenue Department. The official URL of the Department is https://www.ird.gov.mm/.

In August 2025, the Internal Revenue Department reported that there were many online scams and that there were financial losses.

Initially, some businessmen were contacted via Viber numbers claiming to pay taxes, and later on, the fraudsters made phone calls. A businessman said he was told to check whether the information sent via Viber was correct, and then to click on the link sent to verify it.

It is reported that not only large businesses but also small businesses have been affected by similar online frauds, resulting in financial losses. - Eleven Media/ANN
