Thailand, Malaysia successfully test 'Mysawasdee' cross-border tourist train

BANGKOK:  The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has successfully tested the cross-border "MySawasdee” tourist train in collaboration with Malaysia’s national railway operator, Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB), ahead of its scheduled operation by the end of 2025.

Governor of the SRT, Veeris Ammarapala, said the trial run of the "MySawasdee” train was carried out smoothly between Padang Besar and Surat Thani stations from Sept 21 to 23.

"The successful test marks another significant step towards promoting rail tourism and strengthening economic, cultural, and friendship ties between the two neighbouring countries," he said in a statement on Monday (Oct 6).

Veeris said that during the 43rd KTMB-SRT Joint Conference held in August, both parties agreed on a preliminary framework to begin regular train operations around December 2025.

He explained that the "MySawasdee” train was hauled by an SRT QSY locomotive along the Padang Besar-Surat Thani route and returned on Sept 23.

The test covered key technical aspects, including measurements of the clearance between the train and platforms, wheel spacing, coach height, and braking systems, to ensure compliance with safety standards before commencing regular service.

Veeris also revealed that plans are underway to conduct a trial run along the Bangkok-Butterworth route.

He said KTMB will operate a three-car test train - comprising one power car and two passenger coaches - for joint testing along the Bangkok-Padang Besar line as part of preparations for the official launch.

"The extension of the ‘MySawasdee’ train service to Surat Thani will not only offer a new and unique travel experience for passengers but also provide more travel options, generate economic value, and strengthen cultural and social ties between Thailand and Malaysia,” he said.

Currently, the "MySawasdee” train, which services the Kuala Lumpur-Hatyai route, operates only on holidays. - Bernama
