SINGAPORE (The Straits Times/ANN): Singapore’s greatest Paralympian Yip Pin Xiu tied the knot with 34-year-old pilot Bruce Boo at the Jurong Lake Gardens Guesthouse on Oct 4.

The wedding celebration comes just eight days after she won the women’s 50m backstroke S2 event at the World Para Swimming Championships in home waters at the OCBC Aquatic Centre for her eighth world title.

The 33-year-old, who also has seven Paralympic golds and one silver, had announced her engagement to Boo on Instagram on Dec 11, 2024. They had met through a dating app in 2023.

Boo’s proposal took place in early December 2024 when he took her to a PS.Cafe outlet, where they ordered Aperol Spritz – the first drinks they had on their first date – before they went on a curated tour at National Gallery Singapore.

Besides the bubbly and in homage to the couple’s courtship, there was also plenty of prosecco for their 228 guests.

Yip told The Sunday Times: “I’m so grateful and deeply touched by all the love from everyone who joined us in celebrating this new chapter of our lives.

“I thought last week’s world championships was intense, but this week was a whole different kind of wonderful chaos! Running on just two hours of sleep, I’m still filled with joy and gratitude.”

In the wedding programme, Yip said of her husband: “I love his vibe and how goal-oriented he is. He’s never once been intimidated by my success.

“He leads the relationship with confidence – but somehow always makes sure I’m supported in all my goals too. Basically, he’s the best co-pilot.”

Likewise, Boo said of his wife: “I knew she was the one, two months in. Just being with her felt right.”

Yip’s bridesmaid, former Paralympic swimmer Theresa Goh, said it was a beautiful event, adding: “There were happy tears for me seeing Pin Xiu dressed in white and moving into such an important milestone moment.

“Everyone’s extremely happy for the loving couple and it puts me at ease to see my best friend be so loved by Bruce. I’m sure they’re going to have an incredible time on their honeymoon and a wonderful life together.” - The Straits Times/ANN
