BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/ANN): Brunei Darussalam, through the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS), participated in the Asean Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Summit 2025, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from Tuesday to Wednesday.
Permanent Secretary (Community) at the MCYS Hajah Nor Ashikin Johari attended the summit in her capacity as Chair of the Asean Senior Officials Meeting on Rural Development and Poverty Eradication (SOMRDPE).
In her opening remarks, Secretary General of the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) of Malaysia Dato’ Dr Maziah Che Yusoff emphasised the importance of collective action among governments, civil society, academia, youth, and the security sector in bringing about meaningful change for women and girls.
The summit also witnessed the launch of Malaysia’s first National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security (NAP WPS 2025–2030), officiated by Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia Dato’ Sri Haji Fadillah bin Haji Yusof.
The summit’s closing ceremony was officiated by Dato’ Seri Dr Wan Azizah Dr Wan Ismail. She highlighted that the WPS agenda not only covers issues of conflict, but also the dignity, security, and resilience of individuals.
The two-day summit brought together various stakeholders from across the Asean region to strengthen the WPS agenda.
Discussions focused on the implementation of the Asean Regional Plan of Action on WPS, women’s leadership in conflict prevention, as well as emerging challenges such as climate change and digital security. – Borneo Bulletin/ANN
