Cambodian parliament ratifies marine biodiversity agreement

PHNOM PENH: Cambodian National Assembly on Monday (Aug 25) ratified the agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (Unclos) on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction.

Some 119 out of 120 lawmakers in attendance, including Prime Minister Hun Manet (pic), voted in favour of the agreement, said a National Assembly's press release.

Environment Minister Eang Sophalleth said the agreement aimed at conserving marine biological diversity for present and future generations.

He said the approval reflected Cambodia's commitment to advancing environmental sustainability, addressing climate change, and promoting the green economy in line with its long-term goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

"Cambodia's endorsement of the agreement will further strengthen the country's international cooperation, enhance its global standing, and mobilise resources to support national development and environmental protection," he said.

In May 2025, the government authorized the Ministry of Environment to sign the agreement on Cambodia's behalf during the Third United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) held in Nice, France. - Xinhua
