Brunei records 1,163 accidents in 2024

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Statistics on accidents in the Sultanate have shown a relatively flat trend over the past five years while statistics for accidents involving fatalities until June 2025 was 12 people, compared to seven up to June 2024, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Transport) at the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications Mohammad Salihin Aspar shared.

Total accidents showed an increase between 2022–2024, with 1,050 cases in 2022, 1,118 in 2023 and 1,163 in 2024, he said at a press conference at the National Road Safety Council (MKKJR) on Wednesday (Aug 20).

In 2020, the total number of accidents recorded was 1,079 cases with 2021 showing a decline with 1,043 cases.

For road accidents involving injuries, 2020 recorded 341 injuries; 343 in 2021; 359 in 2022; 364 in 2023 and 359 in 2024.

Meanwhile, for road accidents involving fatalities, statistics show 11 deaths in 2020; 16 deaths in 2021; 18 deaths in 2022 while in 2023, the numbers declined to 14 deaths while year 2024 saw 13 deaths.

The press conference yesterday was held to raise public awareness about the importance of remaining vigilant and careful for the safety of road users.

It also shared statistics on accident rates, accident breakdowns, traffic violations and statistics on vehicles that have been penalised and issued fines.

It also serves as part of MKKJR’s efforts regarding road safety in the country. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
