YANGON: Landslides in Thandaunggyi Township, Kayin State, have claimed the lives of 11 persons and damaged about 30 houses, as several persons remain missing, according to local residents.
A local resident said that since Aug 4, torrential rains have caused floods and landslides, and that 11 people have died in landslides on Aug 5 and 6.
He continued, “There are also deaths and missing people in the orchards of Wards (1) and (3) of Than Taunggyi town and the villages around Tukey Khab Chaung, such as Lipe Pyay Lay Village, Khowey Village and other villages. As of the morning of Aug 7, 11 bodies have been recovered.”
In addition, the local resident said that at least 30 houses were damaged in the landslides, and that the bridges on the roads connecting the villages were also destroyed, disrupting transportation, and that he had never experienced anything like this before.
Among the deaths due to landslides caused by heavy rains in Thandaunggyi Township, there was also a landslide that occurred on Aug 5 at around 9pm on a house in Ward (1) of Thandaunggyi Township, killing four members of a family, including two children aged four and nine, according to local reports.
In addition, local residents reported that many orchard trees, including large perennial trees, durian, tangerine, and betel nut, were severely damaged.
Emergency relief teams from Taungoo District, Bago Region have already reached the site of the natural disaster in Thandaunggyi Township, Kayin State, but they are also experiencing delays on the Taungoo-Thandaunggyi road due to damaged creek bridges, landslides, and fallen trees, according to relief teams.
Locals also reported that there is an urgent need for emergency relief efforts in Thandaunggyi Township, Kayin State, which is experiencing such a disaster.
