MANILA: The Philippines and Malaysia are expected to see increased naval cooperation and exercises.

The Philippine News Agency (PNA) reported that this followed a courtesy call by the Chief of the Royal Malaysian Navy, Admiral Datuk Zulhelmy Ithnain, on the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), General Romeo Brawner Jr., on Wednesday (June 25) at the Bulwagang Balangiga in Camp Aguinaldo.

"Both leaders engaged in a constructive discussion on regional security, interoperability and mutual interests in maintaining peace and stability in Southeast Asia. General Brawner expressed appreciation for the continued collaboration between the two nations' naval forces," the AFP said in a statement on Wednesday night.

The meeting between the two military officials reflects the shared commitment of the Manila and Kuala Lumpur to uphold strong defence relations and promote cooperation in addressing common maritime challenges.

"The meeting concluded with an exchange of mementos and renewed pledges of mutual support and camaraderie," the AFP said. - Bernama/PNA
