Two elderly people die from suspected heatstroke in Japan


TOKYO (Xinhua): Two elderly people died from suspected heatstroke in Japan's Iwate and Chiba on Sunday as temperatures rose in the regions, local media reported.

In Kitakami city, Iwate prefecture, an 84-year-old woman collapsed in her garden around noon and was taken to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, national broadcaster NHK reported.

The temperature in Kitakami had reached 30.4 degrees Celsius at the time.

In another incident, a 95-year-old man was found unconscious inside a greenhouse on his property in Chiba prefecture.

Emergency services were called shortly after 1 pm local time, but the man was pronounced dead at the hospital. Authorities suspect heatstroke as the cause in both cases.

According to fire departments in Iwate, 11 people were hospitalised on the same day due to suspected heatstroke.  - Xinhua
