First suspected heatstroke death this year in Tokyo’s 23 wards

TOKYO: A man in his 70s was found collapsed at his home in Toshima Ward, Tokyo, this week and was confirmed dead due to suspected heatstroke, according to the Metropolitan Police Department’s Sugamo Police Station.

This is the first confirmed death from suspected heatstroke within Tokyo’s 23 wards this year, according to the Tokyo Medical Examiner’s Office.

According to a senior official of the police station and other sources, a colleague of the man visited his home on Monday (June 1), found him collapsed and called emergency services. The man is believed to have died on Saturday (May 30).

The air conditioner in his room was reportedly not turned on. The maximum temperature in central Tokyo on Saturday was 29.5 C. - The Yomiuri Shimbun
