Heavy rain triggers flooding in eastern-central Myanmar

YANGON: Residents of the neighborhood reported that heavy flooding is occurring in Taunggyi due to continuous heavy rains every day.

Due to the heavy rain, some neighborhoods in Taunggyi are experiencing flooding from June 9, 2025.

On June 11, it was reported that flooding especially occurred at Taunggyi Shopping Centre Road, Ayeyarwady Road Junction near Taunggyi University, and Gon Htoo Street in Nyaung Phyu Sakhan ward.

Taunggyi is currently facing the problem of flooding every time it rains heavily. It is reported that there have been incidents of flooding on roads and water entering homes.

“It's not easy to sell because of the heavy rain. The shops between Oshin Lane and the lower part of the shopping mall are places that are always flooded,” said a shopkeeper.

Additionally, flooding often occurs in the streets behind the city centre religious hall and nearby areas due to mountain water.

The flooding is caused by garbage being dumped in the drainage ditches, the lack of a proper drainage system, and the blockage of the drains, which is why the area experiences flooding every time it rains.

In addition, on June 8, 2025, at around 3 pm, two young novices were swept away by the heavy rain while bathing at the Mingalar spring in Area 8 of Yatanathiri Ward, Taunggyi Township. - Eleven Media/ANN
