Fact-checking platform set to strengthen Brunei response to fake news, digital scams

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The recently launched Waspada.bn, the first-of-its-kind fact-checking platform for Brunei, will be expanded into a full-fledged website, providing a more comprehensive and structured hub for fact-checking and public reference against fake news and online scams by the first quarter of 2026.

Launched on June 4 by the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI), Waspada.bn is currently operated via Instagram, offering a quick and accessible way for the public to stay updated.

One of the objectives of Waspada.bn is to improve the flow of reliable and accurate information. The platform brings together various government agencies, including the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications, Information Department and AITI, to strengthen the proactive whole-of-government response to address misinformation and online scams.

According to AITI, the public must remain aware that not everything found on the Internet is accurate or reliable. While information is sometimes shared as a method to verify facts, it can inadvertently contribute to the spread of misinformation.

Hence, Waspada.bn enables the public to verify news and information received through social media, stay alert about potential scams and play an active role in curbing the spread of false information.

The platform supports a more informed and vigilant society and is part of a broader collective effort to combat misinformation which poses risks to individuals, organisations and national harmony. - Borneo Bulletin/ANN
