Harvard University sues US administration over ban on enrolment of foreign students

WASHINGTON, May 23 (Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novosti): Harvard University on Friday filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over its decision to ban the enrolment of international students, reported Sputnik/RIA Novosti.

"For more than 70 years, Harvard University ('Harvard' or the 'University') has been certified by the federal government to enrol international students under the F-1 visa programme, and it has long been designated as an exchange programme sponsor to host J-1 nonimmigrants …

"Yesterday, the government abruptly revoked that certification without process or cause, to immediate and devastating effect for Harvard and more than 7,000 visa holders.

"This revocation is a blatant violation of the First Amendment, the Due Process Clause, and the Administrative Procedure Act," the complaint said.

The plaintiff pointed out that foreign students are a quarter of the university’s student body, who make a significant contribution to its mission.

"Harvard respectfully requests the following relief: Declare that Defendants’ actions to revoke Harvard’s SEVP certification through the Revocation Notice are unconstitutional and/or unlawful because they violate the First Amendment, the Due Process Clause, and the APA [Administrative Procedure Act]," the document said. - Bernama-Sputnik/RIA Novost
