Vietnamese President to visit Laos


VIENTIANE: The President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Luong Cuong (pic), will pay a state visit to Laos from April 24-25, according to the Lao Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The two-day visit by the Vietnamese President and his high-level delegation is in response to an invitation from Party Secretary General and President of Laos, Thongloun Sisoulith.

The visit aims to enhance the great relationship, special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between Laos and Vietnam.

Luong Cuong was born on August 15, 1957, in Duu Lau ward, Viet Tri city, Phu Tho province.

He holds a bachelor degree in Party Building and State Governance and a high level qualification in political theory, and became a Party member in July 1978.

In February 1975, he joined the army and from May 2003 to March 2006 he was Deputy Commander of Politics and Secretary of the Party Committee of the Army Corps 2, and was given the rank of Major General in February 2006.

From April 2006 to December 2007, he was Political Commissar and Secretary of the Party Committee of the Army Corps 2, again with the rank of Major General.

From January 2008 to May 2011, he was a member of the 11th Party Central Committee (January 2011), and Political Commissar and Secretary of the Party Committee of Military Region 3, holding the rank of Lieutenant General (August 2009).

From June 2011 to December 2015, he was a member of the 11th Party Central Committee, and Deputy Chief of the General Department of Politics under the Vietnam People’s Army, holding the rank of Senior Lieutenant General (December 2014).

From January 2016 to April 2016, he was Secretary of the 12th Party Central Committee and Deputy Chief of the General Department of Politics under the Vietnam People’s Army, with the rank of Senior Lieutenant General.

From May 2016 to December 2020, he was Secretary of the 12th Party Central Committee, member of the Standing Committee of the Central Military Commission, Chief of the General Department of Politics under the Vietnam People’s Army, and head of the Central Military Commission’s Inspection Committee, holding the rank of General (January 2019).

From January 2021 to April 2024, he was a member of the 13th Party Central Committee’s Politburo; member of the Standing Committee of the Central Military Commission; Chief of the General Department of Politics under the Vietnam People’s Army; and head of the Central Military Commission’s Inspection Committee with the rank of General.

May 2024 to October 2024, he was a member of the 13th Party Central Committee’s Politburo; standing member of the 13th Party Central Committee’s Secretariat; and deputy head of the Central Steering Committee on Prevention and Control of Corruption and Negative Phenomena.

On October 21, 2024, he was elected as the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam by the 15th National Assembly.

Luong Cuong has been a member of the Party Central Committee during its 11th, 12th and 13th tenures, Secretary of the 12th Party Central Committee, and member of the 13th Party Central Committee’s Politburo. - Vientiane Times/ANN
