PHNOM PENH: Police have arrested a 33-year-old fugitive who has been wanted by the Battambang Provincial Court for almost four years, in connection with illegally bringing people across the border into Thailand to work.

On March 29, Colonel VeKimchort, police chief of Kamrieng district, executed an arrest warrant for an individual named Nan Sna in O’Anlork village, of Kamrieng district’s Ta Sen commune. The case dates back to 2021, when he was reportedly involved in smuggling people across the border.

“He was on the run until recently. When we spotted him, we arrested him. He was illegally bringing [people] into Thailand,” he told The Post on Monday (March 31).

In June 2022, Hay Naiheng, chief of the Trial Chamberof the Battambang Provincial Court, sentenced Nan Sna — who was 30 years old at the time — to 15 years in prison in absentia for illegally facilitating border crossings.

The crime took place near a cashew nut farm in Group 6, O’Anlork village, in Kamrieng district’s Ta Sen commune, on Oct 13, 2021. The offence falls under Article 11 of the Law on the Suppression of Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation.

The court issued an arrest warrant for Nan Sna under Article 353 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Authorities were ordered to locate him and transfer him to the court. The warrant specified that his home was in the village where he was captured.

Under the warrant, he must be brought before a prosecutor as soon as possible, informed of the charges against him, and transferred to a provincial prison.

Police chief Kimchort confirmed that Nan Sna had already been handed over to the provincial police headquarters, however, he said that he was unaware of the number of people Sna had smuggled into Thailand.

On March 30, the National Police announced that law enforcement officers had transferred the fugitive to the Battambang Provincial Court for further legal proceedings. - The Phnom Penh Post/ANN
