Indonesia seeks to raise university research funding to one per cent of GDP, talent development is the way forward, says minister

JAKARTA, March 14 (Bernama-Xinhua) -- The Indonesian government aims to increase research funding for universities to one per cent of the country's gross domestic product (GDP), a significant rise from the 0.3 per cent allocated in 2024, Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology Brian Yuliarto has announced.

"The President is committed to improving the welfare of lecturers, including through an actual increase in research funding," Yuliarto said at the State Palace in Jakarta, stressing that expanding research investment is key to revitalising Indonesia's economy and industry.

While acknowledging that achieving the one per cent target cannot happen immediately, Yuliarto emphasised the government's ongoing efforts to strengthen research and innovation in universities.

His ministry has allocated 2 trillion rupiahs (around US$122.1 million) for research, sourced from the state budget, the Endowment Fund for Education, and industry partnerships.

"This marks a significant milestone in our collective efforts to transform universities into hubs of innovation and talent development," he said. - Bernama-Xinhua
