'Celebrities must realise they have big responsibilities in their career' says Karyawan on radio deejays' video issue

KUALA LUMPUR: Commenting on the recent case of Era FM radio announcers who allegedly mocked a Hindu ceremony, Karyawan said such acts have threatened the country's harmony.

Karyawan, whose primary role is to advocate for the rights and welfare of artists within the Malaysian entertainment scene, however, said in a media release on Friday (March 27), what the three Era FM deejays did was an error of judgement on their part.

For the record, a video allegedly mocking the Thaipusam ritual has drawn widespread attention. The chant “Vel Vel”, which is commonly heard during the Thaipusam religious celebration, was unintentionally used as part of a celebratory dance act by several radio announcers at a popular radio station.

Following this incident, the station’s management took immediate action by temporarily suspending the three deejays in question, Nabil, Azad, and Radin. In a recent development, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) also issued a Notice of Intent to Suspend the License to the license holder of the radio station.

Karyawan’s President, Datuk Freddie Fernandez, stated: “Karyawan views this incident as an important lesson to ensure that no party takes religious and racial sensitivities lightly.

"Malaysia was built on a strong  foundation of unity and harmony among its multiracial and multi-religious population.

"Therefore, it is our collective responsibility to understand and respect one another, particularly in matters related to religion.”

Karyawan also believes that this incident was not intentional but rather stemmed from a lack of understanding regarding Hindu religious rituals among those involved.

However, the sincerity shown by the Era FM DJs, who personally went to Batu Caves to apologize, along with Era FM’s firm action in suspending them, reflects their remorse and  acceptance of responsibility for their mistake.

“I believe this is a significant lesson for the DJs and the radio station itself. With a humble heart, I would like to request that our Hindu community forgive their poor judgement. They have publicly expressed their regret, and I truly believe they have learned their lesson,” said Freddie.

Karyawan also expresses concern over the ongoing controversy on social media, where many negative comments and reactions from various parties could further escalate tensions between the races.

“If this issue continues to drag on, I fear it could create divisions that may threaten our unity. Therefore, I urge everyone to take this as a learning experience while also allowing room for forgiveness.

"This lapse in judgment should serve as a valuable lesson not only for those involved but for all Malaysians so that we may continue to respect each other’s beliefs and cultures.”
