SINGAPORE (The Straits Times/ANN): A man accused of killing a 67-year-old woman in November 2024 was taken back to the crime scene in Ang Mo Kio by police on Jan 21.

Ng Chen Heng, 66, was arrested on Nov 29 and charged the next day with murdering Ms Lim Suan Lian.

Preliminary investigations showed that they knew each other. The Straits Times understands that the couple were in a relationship, but not married.

According to charge sheets, Ng allegedly committed the murder between Nov 27 and Nov 29 in a unit at Block 125 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 6.

Ms Lim was found lying motionless and later pronounced dead at the scene.

On Jan 21, Ng arrived in an unmarked vehicle at around 9am and was escorted by five plain-clothes police officers to the void deck of Block 125 as several members of the public gathered to watch.

Ng, who was wearing a red polo shirt and had his arms and legs in restraints, was taken to a unit on the fourth floor. The media could not follow him there as a police cordon was set up near the lift.

Several police officers were stationed at the cordon, and an officer stood outside the flat as investigators escorted Ng in.

After more than two hours, Ng came out and kept his head down as he was led back into the police van.

Ng faces the death penalty if convicted of murder.

In 2024, the number of murder reports was at its highest in five years, with 10 cases reported that year.

According to the Singapore Department of Statistics, there were four murders in 2023, seven each in 2022 and 2021, and eight in 2020.

The Ang Mo Kio murder was one of the 10 cases in 2024, and was the first of three murder reports in two weeks.

On Dec 2, the police found the body of a 30-year-old woman in a Housing Board flat in Dover.
