Japan to actively recruit nurses from South-East Asia

TOKYO: There are currently about 2.15 million nursing care workers, but there will be an estimated shortage of about 250,000 workers in fiscal 2026 and about 570,000 in fiscal 2040.

Japan’s Health, Labour and Welfare Ministry will actively promote the recruitment of nursing care staff from South-East Asia, from fiscal year 2025, to cope with the serious labour shortage in the industry.
