BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: His Royal Highness Prince ‘Abdul Mateen and Yang Amat Mulia Pengiran Anak Isteri Anisha Rosnah binti Adam graced the launching ceremony of the Faith & Devotion Art Exhibition at Balai Khazanah Islam Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah on Thursday (July 18).

The launch ceremony was also attended by cabinet ministers, senior officials, heads of GLCs and other invited guests.

The exhibition, a first of its kind in Brunei, showcases over 20 orientalist paintings by renowned 19th-century artists including Jean-Leon Gerome, Osman Hamdi Bey and Rudolf Ernst.

Themed “Faith & Devotion”, the paintings collectively explore the diverse depictions of the Muslim world, known as “the Orient” in the 19th century.

They highlight Islamic culture and religion during a period when artists from Europe, America and the Ottoman Empire (later Turkey) were deeply inspired by the region’s cultural and religious practices.

The artworks cover a vast area from Morocco in the west, to Anatolia and Constantinople in the north, and extend to Egypt, the Levant, and India in the east. – Borneo Bulletin/ANN
