Indonesia and Thailand eye education cooperation boost; many Thais want to further education in Jakarta

JAKARTA (Bernama-Antara):Thailand plans to increase collaboration in the education sector with Indonesia, according to deputy chairperson of the Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation Committee (BKSAP) of Indonesia's House of Representatives (DPR), Putu Supadma Rudana, reported Indonesian News Agency (Antara).

"They are interested in collaborating in the education sector because many Thai students, including those on scholarships, are pursuing their degrees in Indonesia, particularly Yogyakarta City," he said in a statement.

Rudana made the statement after receiving a visit from Thai parliament representatives on Saturday.

He added that Indonesia is also interested in building on existing cooperation and intensifying collaboration in several fields.

The Thai parliamentarians visited Jakarta and Yogyakarta, a popular destination for Thai students studying in Indonesia. They are planning a visit to Bali. Their visit aimed to strengthen relations between the two countries.

Rudana highlighted that cooperation between Indonesia and Thailand has been well maintained. He added that Thailand offers many potential areas for collaboration, ranging from tourist destinations to well-known agricultural products across ASEAN.

During their meeting, both sides discussed specific topics, including the resolution on Myanmar adopted at the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly Forum in Brunei Darussalam. The discussion focused on its implementation.

Rudana emphasised Indonesia's active role in ensuring swift action on the resolution.

"We want to accelerate the implementation of the resolution, and one way to achieve this is by encouraging the formation of a taskforce."

He expressed hope that the taskforce can become a mediator for realising peace and democracy in Myanmar.

Rudana also called for support from Thailand and other member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) for the immediate implementation of the Myanmar resolution. - Bernama-Antara
