Brunei set for gala celebration as it gears up for 40th anniversary; China among first to congratulate Sultan Hassanal


BEIJING (Xinhua): Chinese President Xi Jinping extended on Friday his congratulations to Brunei's Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah on the country's 40th anniversary of independence.

In his congratulatory message, Xi said China and Brunei enjoy a time-honored traditional friendship, and the cooperation between the two countries has seen important results, setting an example for equality and win-win cooperation between countries of different sizes.

Xi also noted that during his meeting with Sultan Hassanal in San Francisco in November, the two sides reached important consensus on developing bilateral relations, injecting fresh impetus into bilateral strategic cooperation.

Xi added that he is ready to work with Sultan Hassanal to maintain strategic communication, strengthen guidance for bilateral relations, and promote high-quality Belt and Road cooperation to bring more benefits to the two peoples and make positive contributions to regional peace, stability, development and prosperity.

Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi also extended his congratulations to Erywan Yusof, second minister of foreign affairs of Brunei, on the country's 40th anniversary of independence.

In his congratulatory message, Wang, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, said China and Brunei are traditional friendly neighbors and important cooperation partners.

The recent years have seen bilateral relations develop soundly, high-quality Belt and Road cooperation between the two countries further deepen, and the friendship between the two peoples get increasingly closer, he said.

Wang added that he stands ready to work with Erywan to follow through on the important consensus reached by the two heads of state, expand practical cooperation in various fields between the two countries, and strengthen coordination on global and regional affairs, so as to push for greater development of China-Brunei strategic cooperative partnership. - Xinhua
