BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Japan’s Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Kikuta Yutaka on Monday (Feb 9) highlighted the importance of a balanced “best mix” approach in Brunei’s economic diversification, combining the continued strength of the traditional energy sector with the growth of new industries, as he hosted a reception to mark the 66th birthday of the Emperor of Japan.

Speaking at the reception held at the Rizqun International Hotel, the ambassador said Japan remains a committed partner in supporting Brunei’s development journey, noting that long-standing cooperation in the oil and gas sector, particularly liquefied natural gas, has for decades formed the backbone of bilateral relations.

At the same time, he said Japan is keen to expand collaboration in emerging and non-traditional sectors, including downstream industries, agriculture, forestry, fisheries, information and communications technology, and services, in line with Brunei’s diversification goals.

Currently, 21 Japanese companies operate in Brunei, contributing to economic growth through initiatives such as methanol production and the application of biotechnology in the food and health sectors, he added.

The reception was attended by Minister of Home Affairs Dato Seri Setia Awang Ahmaddin Abdul Rahman and spouse as guests of honour, alongside senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives from the business, academic and cultural sectors, and Japanese residents in Brunei.

Senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives from the business, academic and cultural sectors, and Japanese residents in Brunei are among guests at the event.

On people-to-people ties, the ambassador said youth and academic exchanges continue to play a vital role in strengthening bilateral relations.

He cited ongoing collaborations between Bruneian institutions and Japanese universities, including Kagawa University and Osaka University, as well as a rise in educational visits by Japanese students to Brunei.

He added that improved air connectivity, following the resumption of code-sharing flights between Royal Brunei Airlines and Japan Airlines last October, is expected to more than double the number of Japanese tourists visiting Brunei compared to last year.

The reception also featured exhibition booths by Japanese companies operating in Brunei, showcasing their achievements and ongoing activities. – Borneo Bulletin/ANN
