BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN (Borneo Bulletin/Asia News Network): A Year 10 student from Chung Hwa Middle School Bandar Seri Begawan (CHMS BSB) recently won an outstanding performance award during the International Science Drama Competition 2023 (ISDC 2023) in Bangkok, Thailand.

Ardan Lee Hao, part of a five member team representing the Seria Energy Lab (SEL), was presented the Outstanding Male Performer Award in the Open category.

“I was in a state of shock, joy and disbelief,” said Lee, adding that “I had to confirm with the coach whether or not it was really me.”

Lee was part of team Brunei Eco Ensemble, formed by the SEL after a selection process involving over 100 students.

The team, comprising students from across the country, earned a Merit award for the Open category with their Alistair in Wonderville showcase, a story on electronic waste, microplastics and chicken plumping.

The story also focused on unethical experimentation on animals in the health and beauty industry.

It was the first time for Lee to participate. For him, one of the biggest challenges was making the lengthy commute back and forth from the capital to Seria every week for rehearsals and training on science communication, research, collaboration and showmanship for almost five months.

He said he was thankful for his supportive parents and teachers who brought him to practice.

“It was like a tag-team, alternating between each other on who to bring me there. Without them, I wouldn’t have made it this far, so I’m deeply thankful,” he added.

Lee said the team was delighted to be able to perform alongside peers from other countries, and was glad that their performance in Bangkok went smoothly.

“I am proud to be a part of the Brunei team. I would say the most valuable thing that I have gained from this competition is the friendships and memories – they are priceless and will always hold a special place in my heart,” he said.

The event was SEL’s fourth time to send a team to participate.

The ISDC was created to spark youth interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematic (STEM) education and highlight performing arts as a medium of learning.
